WHY BOTHER WITH INNOVATION ?

DEMING FUNNEL in INTERACTIVE 3D AUGMENTED REALITY

A man asked me regarding our new FREE Deming Funnel in Interactive 3D Augmented Reality: "Can I ask, who has asked for this and what is the market for such? I have not mentioned it or heard others discuss it for over 10 years."

I replied:

"The market for anything to do with Deming, or anything to do with Quality as it is meant to be, is small these days. Most people have forgotten what Quality means. Most people have forgotten how Deming laid the foundations of Quality. These days, Quality is in the Dark Ages. For these reasons, the app will be free. Our hope is that some folk will be enticed to learn.

When done physically, the funnel experiment must be an absolute pain in the butt. It is very tedious with balls rolling off and trying to measure distances and move the funnel. I can see why Deming didn't use it in lectures ... and probably why you haven't seen it for over 10 years. However in Augmented Reality, it is not only super cool but super practical.

I always reckon that if I get a kick out of something that I'm building, after testing it thousands of times, others will enjoy it too.

Unlike other professions where founders are venerated, most people see Deming as "old hat". They want new and shiny fads like the Six Sigma. The fact that even the creator of Six Sigma admitted Six Sigma was a scam doesn't bother them ... as long as it's new and shiny. Deming Funnel in Interactive 3D Augmented Reality will help bring Deming into 21st century and add a little shine.

Finally, our AR funnel is very innovative. I haven't seen any such professional use of AR. There's a few "toy" AR applications like spaceships flying around your lounge room, but I haven't seen anything useful apart from Google. I certainly haven't seen anything interactive in AR. I just love breaking new ground, even if it does happen to fall on many on deaf ears and blind eyes.

I don't see many business applications for Interactive AR, but this one is perfect. I don't think many people will even attempt building stuff. Development is difficult for several reasons.

BTW, the videos are made using my crappy $200 old Android phone. The recording and app are running together simultaneously. It could just as easily be screen cast onto a big screen for a lecture. Members of the audience could be invited out to drop a few (virtual) balls. The Process Behavior Charts and histograms generated would make for some interesting and educational group discussion.

"

Quality consultant @AllenScott, always with his finger on the pulse, chimed in:

" You say 'No one has asked for it.' Professor Deming had a response for that:

'Customer expectations? Nonsense. No customer ever asked for the electric light, the pneumatic tire, the VCR, or the CD. All customer expectations are only what you and your competitor have led him to expect. He knows nothing else.'"
